The Milwaukee Bucks’ championship hopes have taken a hit as star guard Damian Lillard has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right calf. The team announced the news on Tuesday, stating that Lillard is out indefinitely and has been placed on blood-thinning medication.

According to the Bucks’ medical team, the medication has successfully stabilized the condition, and Lillard is now undergoing a carefully monitored process to ensure he’s able to return to play. The team will continue to test him regularly, though it remains unclear when he might step back onto the court.

“Damian’s health is our No. 1 priority,” Bucks general manager Jon Horst said in a statement. “We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with the recovery.”

Lillard, who was acquired by the Bucks in a blockbuster trade to pair him with Giannis Antetokounmpo, has been averaging 24.9 points and 7.1 assists per game. The dynamic duo was expected to make Milwaukee a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference, but Lillard’s health scare now leaves his future for the season uncertain.

The seven-time All-Star spoke candidly about the diagnosis in a statement to NBA reporter Chris Haynes:

“It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control would come up,” Lillard said. “Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priorities are to protect my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, I need to be there for my kids and my family. I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this. They’ve been supportive and proactive throughout this process. I look forward to moving past this and continuing my career.”

Lillard is the second high-profile NBA player to be diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis this season. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a similar condition diagnosed on February 20.

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious medical condition where blood clots form in the deep veins of the body, most commonly in the legs. If untreated, it can lead to life-threatening complications. Fortunately for Lillard, the Bucks’ quick response and appropriate medical intervention have likely reduced the chances of further complications.
