Good Morning America host Michael Strahan and newly appointed Norfolk State University head coach Michael Vick have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
These iconic athletes, each with ties to HBCUs, are being celebrated for their extraordinary contributions to college football and their enduring legacies.
Strahan’s football journey began at Texas Southern University, where he established himself as one of the most dominant defensive linemen in college football history. From 1989 to 1992, Strahan shattered records, amassing 41.5 career sacks, including an astounding 19 sacks during his senior year—a performance that earned him national recognition.
Strahan’s accolades include back-to-back SWAC Defensive Player of the Year honors, First-Team All-SWAC selections, and the 1992 Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year award by the Associated Press. That same year, he was named the Black College Defensive Player of the Year, cementing his status as one of the greatest players to come out of an HBCU program.
After graduating, Strahan was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Over a stellar 15-year NFL career, he recorded 141.5 sacks, ranking fifth all-time upon his retirement. Strahan’s achievements include being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections, and securing a Super Bowl championship. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014, further solidifying his legendary status.
Vick’s impact started as a quarterback at Virginia Tech. As a freshman in 1999, Vick led the Hokies to an undefeated regular season (11-0) and their first-ever appearance in the national championship game. His dual-threat capabilities earned him First-Team All-American honors and solidified his place in college football history.
In 2001, Vick became the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, selected by the Atlanta Falcons. During his 13-season NFL career, he revolutionized the position, combining speed, athleticism, and a cannon-like arm to become one of the league’s most dynamic players. Vick earned multiple Pro Bowl selections and remains one of the most influential quarterbacks in football.
The induction ceremony, set to take place later this year, will honor these legends’ achievements and serve as a source of inspiration for future players from HBCUs and beyond.
