Chris Brown is taking legal action against Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Ample Entertainment, accusing them of defamation over the release of Chris Brown: A History of Violence.
The Residuals singer filed a $500 million lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court today, claiming that the documentary falsely portrays him as a serial sexual abuser and rapist while disregarding evidence that discredits such allegations.
The lawsuit alleges that WBD and Ample Entertainment prioritized sensationalism and financial gain over factual accuracy. Brown’s attorneys, Arnold Shokouchi and Levi McCathern, assert that the companies knowingly aired false claims despite being presented with evidence proving the allegations were fabricated.
“To put it simply, this case is about the media putting their own profits over the truth,” the complaint states. “Since the beginning of October of 2024, Ample LLC and Warner Brothers were put on notice that they were promoting and publishing false information in their pursuit of likes, clicks, downloads and dollars and to the detriment of Chris Brown”
The lawsuit also targets the documentary’s central accuser, referred to as Jane Doe, who Brown claims has a history of violence, dishonesty, and legal disputes.
Brown’s lawyers cite a 2022 civil lawsuit filed by Doe alleging sexual assault, which was dismissed after text messages uncovered by Miami Beach police exposed her claims as fabricated. The suit references a restraining order filed against Doe by a former boyfriend in 2021 for alleged physical assault, threats with a knife, and online harassment. Brown’s team argues that Doe’s documented behavior should have raised concerns about her credibility, but the documentary presented her as a reliable source.
“These incidents, detailed in court records and leading to her arrest by the Los Angeles Police Department, were disregarded by the Defendants, who instead framed her as credible to support their narrative,” the complaint reads.
Brown, who has spent the past decade attempting to rebuild his image following earlier legal troubles, claims the documentary has caused significant damage to his reputation, career, and business opportunities.
The lawsuit further accuses the filmmakers of ignoring facts that did not align with the narrative they wanted to tell and misrepresents Brown’s past.
Brown is seeking $500 million in damages, part of which he pledges to donate to survivors of sexual abuse.
As of now, Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment have not issued public statements in response to the lawsuit.
