According to Modern Ghana, with racial tensions brewing in the US, The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Barbara Oteng-Gyasi is inviting African Americans to resettle in Ghana if they feel betrayed by the societal culture. She made this statement during the memorial ceremony at W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Center for Pan-African Culture in Ghana, which was held in honor of George Floyd. The ceremony was a collaboration between the Ghana Tourism Authority, Office of Diaspora Affairs and the Diaspora African Forum. Ms. Oteng-Gyasi hopes that George Floyd’s death will invoke change and bring an end to racism in the US and around the world.
Last year, Ghana welcomed Africans in the diaspora into the country through the government initiative named the “Year of Return”. Countless African Americans and Blacks from other countries visited Ghana. This year the government launched “Beyond the Return”, which is another initiative to assist Africans in the diaspora to live in Ghana and invest in the economy.
In the wake of George Floyd’s death and the ever-present racial divide crippling the US, Ghana offers solace and a fresh start to those who are willing to accept. Floyd died after officer Derrick Chauvin knelt on his neck, and this horrific injustice has garnered protests from around the world. Chauvin has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. The three remaining officers J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas K. Lane, and Tou Thao were also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting murder.
