Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files is officially going to series at Hulu. Produced through Coogler’s Proximity Media alongside Onyx Collective and 20th Television, the series stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated, vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when assigned to investigate unexplained phenomena in a long-shuttered division.

Coogler wrote and directed the pilot episode himself.

“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” he said in a statement. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.”

The original The X-Files premiered on Fox in 1993, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The landmark series defined 1990s television through its blend of standalone Monster of the Week episodes and an overarching government conspiracy mythology that kept audiences debating for nine seasons.

Coogler’s version isn’t a remake or a direct recasting of those characters; it operates as a contemporary continuation within the established universe, introducing new agents to reopen the division.

Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner. Original series creator Chris Carter is on board as an executive producer, a sign that this reimagining has the blessing of the man who built the mythology in the first place.
