Mike Epps is returning to Netflix for a new comedy series. My Father’s Son is described as a father-son story inspired by the life of Chris “Comedian CP” Powell, the rising stand-up comedian from Detroit. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The new series expands Epps’s relationship with Netflix, as the comedian recently wrapped up the popular comedy series The Upshaws.

My Father’s Son is now going through its third round of development. Initially, it was set up as a live-action show for HBO Max, with Powell himself attached to headline and co-write it as his own story, before moving to Netflix for development as an animated series. The current iteration is for live-action, with Epps now starring and Powell staying on as an executive producer. The commitment shows that Netflix is betting on Epps, who released his fifth stand-up special, Delusional, earlier this year.

Netflix executives like VP of Comedy Tracey Pakosta have issued formal praise for Epps, highlighting him as a “singular talent who has been a foundational part of the Netflix family” following the success of his sitcom The Upshaws and his fifth special, Delusional.

Epps will executive produce My Father’s Son alongside his producing partner Niles Kirchner, Bob Teitel of State Street, and Maurice Williams (Entergalactic), who will also serve as writer-showrunner. Doug Banker is also aboard as an executive producer via Five All in the Fifth, as are Trevor Engelson of Underground and Comedian CP himself.

Epps, who is currently on his We Them Ones comedy tour, has kept busy across film and television, with recent credits including Netflix’s Kevin Hart comedy 72 Hours and Paramount+’s The Varnell Hill Show, along with past roles in I’m a Virgo, Survivor’s Remorse, Winning Time, and films including The Underdoggs, You People, and Dolemite Is My Name.

For Comedian CP, his star has been on the rise in recent years. The Detroit native was first introduced to a wide audience when he played Lil Prince on Lee Daniels’s Empire, and audiences have since watched him on Detroiters and HBO Max’s Love Life. He most recently released the special Sunday After Six on BET after it premiered on Veeps, and co-produced and appeared in Diarra From Detroit and How to Die Alone. He’s next set to appear in Prime Video’s Barbershop series.

Although Netflix has yet to make an official statement about the series, anticipation from fans has taken over social media.
