Paramount+ has dropped the official trailer for The Varnell Hill Show, an eight-episode comedy series premiering globally on Tuesday, September 1. Starring Tommy Davidson, the workplace satire reunites Davidson with Martin star Martin Lawrence and director-showrunner Bentley Kyle Evans, marking a nostalgic, full-circle moment for 1990s sitcom fans.

Set behind the scenes of a long-running late-night talk show, The Varnell Hill Show follows the larger-than-life host as he fights to maintain his cultural relevance in a rapidly shifting television landscape. While network executives push to modernize the program and a chaotic writers’ room struggles to keep pace, Varnell remains convinced of one thing: he is still the undisputed biggest star in the building.

Combining traditional workplace comedy with satire, cutaways, and fourth-wall breaks, the series dives into the corporate, creative, and personal mayhem required to keep The Varnell Hill Show on the air.

The ensemble cast features Davidson leading as Varnell Hill alongside Kym Whitley, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Nick Cafero, Emmanuel Hudson, and Chris Williams. The premiere season will also feature special appearances by Lawrence alongside guest stars including Ms. Pat, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans, Mike Epps, and Omarion.

For Davidson, bringing Varnell Hill back to life represents the payoff of a seven-year passion project aimed at expanding a single guest appearance into a fully realized comedic universe. “It took us seven years to do it,” Davidson told The Quintessential Gentleman. “Varnell is a combination of both of our careers and where we are right now and our capabilities. So if you’re going to take two producers to do a show like this, we’d be the perfect ones, and we’d be the perfect stars to do our own thing.”

Davidson credits the spark for the entire project to a single phone call from Kid, of Kid ‘n Play, who pointed out that late night was missing genuine live performances and suggested he revive Varnell for a full talk show built to host anyone. “It was one phone call,” Davidson said. “He was right. And me and Martin did their first music video. So that’s how they know us. So we get to bring the ’90s into now and then now into the future. What show will do that?”
