Nolan Wells should have turned 19 on August 19, surrounded by a birthday cake, candles, and laughter. Instead, the day has become a somber milestone of remembrance for his family, who shared a deeply emotional letter dedicated to their “Nono” in heaven.
As the Wells family faces his birthday without him, grief, sorrow and uncertainty loom as loved ones continue to wrestle with the teen’s unexplained death following a July 4 boating trip with a group of friends to Mississippi’s Horn Island.
More than six weeks after the incident, the investigation remains active, though officials have provided few definitive answers to the public. Law enforcement authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the Southwest Mississippi Community College student’s death, and to date, officials have given no public indication that a crime occurred. While initial discussions raised drowning as a possible cause, official findings remain incomplete, leaving the exact timeline and cause of death unconfirmed.
That lack of clarity has divided the local community, fueling widespread online speculation, harassment and threats directed at both Nolan’s grieving family and the group of friends who accompanied him on the trip.
Civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, have since joined the family in calling for full transparency, an independent review of the evidence and a thorough accounting of Nolan’s final hours.
To mark his birthday, the Wells family penned a moving message to honor his legacy and express their enduring love.
“Today you are 19 Nono! There are so many things we want to say but we will keep it simple. As we sit here and reflect on what an amazing kiddo you grew up to be, we can’t help but to feel blessed, honored, proud, but most of all thankful. Thankful we were able to experience a glimpse of God’s love in human form,” they wrote. “Although you are no longer physically here with us, we will always celebrate you and the legacy you have left for us to protect. You have taught us so much about life and how everyday is a blessing and how we have to do better at just living in the moment. Thank you for being the best son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend anyone could ever ask for. Thank you for bringing joy, laughter and real happiness to us each and every day. You are truly our angel. You will be missed every second of everyday and you will never be forgotten our sweet sonshine. Happy Heavenly 19th Birthday Nono. Remember don’t eat too much Oreo cake and hug Grandma for us. Mahal na mahal ka namin, aming pinakamamahal na anak at kapatid,” which the family translated as, “We love you, our beloved son and brother.” They signed the letter, “Love, Mom, Dad, Siblings, and Family.”
