Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a dream for many actors, but it comes with a unique set of rules, among them: absolute secrecy. In a recent interview with GQ, star Tramell Tillman finally opened up about making his long-awaited MCU debut as Bill Metzger and what it was really like to take a leap of faith into one of Hollywood’s most guarded franchises.
While Metzger might be a name known primarily to die-hard comic book readers, the character carries massive implications for the future of the Marvel universe. But as Tillman revealed, getting the full picture of who he was playing wasn’t as simple as opening a script.
Tillman’s journey into the MCU began around Memorial Day weekend during a trip to Los Angeles, when his team called with the life-changing offer: did he want to do a Marvel movie? Though joining Marvel had been on his personal bucket list for years, the reality of Marvel’s intense security protocols kicked in almost immediately.
“I’m pretty sure I had to sign NDAs even before that conversation happened,” Tillman shared. “It was a little frustrating, because everything was shrouded in secrecy. So I wasn’t even sure specifically how the character would fit into the world of the movie.”
The initial meeting with director Destin Daniel Cretton turned into a delicate dance of information. Marvel needed to protect its secrets in case Tillman didn’t take the part, while Tillman was trying to figure out what he was actually signing up for.
“We’re kind of playing this back-and-forth game where I’m asking Destin, ‘Well, what can you tell me?’ And Destin would say, ‘It’s this and that, but I can’t say anything more than that,'” Tillman recalled. “But he told me it was a pivotal role, and that’s about it. So this was a leap of faith.”
Faced with a choice between waiting for a different Marvel opportunity down the line or taking the plunge, Tillman trusted his instincts and jumped in, a decision he says he’s glad he made. Once on board, Tillman worked closely with Cretton and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes to flesh out Metzger beyond the top-secret pages.
Together, they found the core hook for the character: a calculated mix of corporate influence and political maneuvering. “The description we landed on was that he’s a corporate guy but also a bit of a politician,” Tillman explained. “And that gave me a lot to feed on and break ground on the role.”
Now that the secrecy is finally lifting, fans can look forward to seeing how Tillman’s multifaceted performance shapes the next chapter of the MCU.
