The watch world has been buzzing for days. Full-page abstract ads appeared in major newspapers without a product shot or a price or even a name, just cryptic pop-art visuals and enough suggestive typography to send collectors, resellers, and enthusiasts into a full speculation spiral.

By Tuesday, the mystery was over. Swatch and Audemars Piguet (AP) have officially revealed their first-ever collaboration, and it comes with a major twist.

The collection, titled “Royal Pop,” is set for a global, in-store-only synchronized launch this Saturday, May 16.

While many expected a traditional wristwatch, the collaboration has pivoted to a bold, retro-modern format: The Royal Pop is a pocket watch. This choice is a nod to both Audemars Piguet’s historical mastery of pocket watch complications and the playful, modular nature of Swatch.

The design reimagines the legendary octagonal Royal Oak silhouette, allowing the watch head to be removed from its Bioceramic case and swapped into different colorful accessories, including lanyards and clips.

Unlike previous Swatch collaborations with Omega or Blancpain, this drop is a massive cultural milestone because Audemars Piguet is an independent brand. This is the first time a “Holy Trinity” watchmaker has allowed its most iconic design to be reimagined through Swatch’s lens of accessibility and fun.

The Royal Pop design allows the watch head to be removed from its primary housing and swapped into various Bioceramic holders, giving owners the flexibility to clip the timepiece to their clothing or wear it as a necklace. This “Pop” DNA brings a sense of versatility and playfulness to the high-end aesthetic typically associated with Audemars Piguet.

Further separating this collaboration from the quartz-driven MoonSwatch, the Royal Pop is confirmed to feature a mechanical movement. This shift toward horological substance is expected to drive significant interest from purists and new collectors alike.

To match its vibrant energy, the collection will launch in eight distinct colorways, ranging from classic navy and white to high-energy shades of pink, orange, and neon yellow. While official pricing has yet to be finalized, the inclusion of a mechanical engine suggests a retail price point between $300 and $500.

True to the Swatch playbook, the Royal Pop will be an in-store exclusive. No online sales will be available at launch, and collectors are already anticipated to camp out at participating boutiques across 20 global cities.

Stay tuned to Swatch’s official channels 48 to 72 hours before the drop for the final store list and official pricing.
