If you have been waiting for a gritty, high-stakes drama that blurs the lines between good and bad, Netflix’s upcoming series Nemesis is about to move straight to the top of your watchlist. The streaming giant just dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated Los Angeles-based crime series, and it is already promising an epic, edge-of-your-seat cat-and-mouse chase.

From the brilliant minds of Power creator Courtney A. Kemp and co-creator Tani Marole, Nemesis centers on a volatile, deeply personal clash between two men on opposite sides of the law.

Y’lan Noel stars as Coltrane Wilder, a “reformed” convict, respected entrepreneur, and brilliant master thief who moonlights by cracking safes and swiping jewels. Hot on his tail is Isaiah Stiles, played by Matthew Law, a relentless LAPD detective whose obsession with taking Wilder down threatens to consume his entire life and career.

Nemesis 3

As the newly released trailer reveals, the series doesn’t rely on simple hero-and-villain tropes. In the opening moments, Wilder declares, “Real men live by our own set of rules,” to which Stiles quickly counters, “Nah, real men know right from wrong.” It perfectly sets the stage for a narrative where both men are essentially reflections of one another, two driven individuals doing whatever it takes to provide for their families.

According to Kemp, the title of the show speaks directly to this delicate and destructive dance. “We definitely wanted to address the idea of a nemesis, someone who takes you down because of you,” Kemp explained to Netflix’s Tudum. “You make all the wrong decisions because of them, and you blow up your whole life by making bad choices.”

Marole also highlighted the show’s focus on moral ambiguity. “We’re used to the white shining knight and the black cat. What if the black cat’s actually this great human being, and he just happens to do crime for a living? And what if the shining knight has some real anger issues, might need therapy, but he’s the hero?” Marole noted. “They both have moral compasses. It’s just about which side of the coin they’re on.”

Wilder, who maintains a charitable streak to keep the authorities at bay, proves to be an incredibly elusive target. However, Stiles refuses to let up, even as his police chief (played by Michael Potts) questions his judgment and the collateral damage continues to pile up.

The emotional stakes are raised even further as both men’s wives, Candace (Gabrielle Dennis) and Ebony (Cleopatra Coleman), are pulled into the destructive blast radius of their husbands’ escalating feud.

With a massive $6 million haul of untraceable diamonds on the line for Wilder’s promised “one last job,” the tension between the two adversaries is set to boil over.

Nemesis will officially begin streaming on Netflix on May 14. Check out the trailer.
