Get ready for the wildest road trip of the summer. O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Dave Franco are teaming up to lead the highly anticipated new comedy-thriller Idiots. Fresh off a buzzy premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the chaotic buddy comedy is gearing up for a widespread theatrical release, though it’s arriving with a slightly different name than originally planned.

If the film sounds vaguely familiar, you might recognize it by its very provocative original title: The Shitheads. While the bold name certainly grabbed the industry’s attention when it was first announced, Independent Film Company (IFC) recently opted to switch to the much safer, more marketable title of Idiots ahead of its summer release.

Written and directed by Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, The Toxic Avenger), Idiots follows two guys who have officially hit rock bottom. Mark (Franco) is an apathetic, drug-abusing scumbag, while Davis (Jackson) is a deeply religious but slightly dimwitted striver trying to do better.

Despite their glaring differences, the two wayward failures are forced to work together when they take a shady gig escorting a wealthy, out-of-control teenager named Sheridan (Mason Thames) to a rehabilitation facility. However, they soon learn that this rich brat isn’t actually going to rehab for drugs, but rather for severe behavioral issues.

What is supposed to be a straightforward transport gig quickly spirals into dangerous mayhem, setting the stage for unpredictable situations, bizarre characters, and plenty of unapologetic gross-out humor. Yet, beneath the shoot-outs and wild hijinks, early reviews praise the film for surprisingly deep emotional undercurrents as audiences actually start to root for the two lovable losers.

The film features appearances from Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Nicholas Braun (Succession), and even a role for Grammy-winning rapper Killer Mike.

The film officially hits theaters on Friday, August 28.
