Dwyane Wade Teams Up with JPMorganChase to Tackle Athlete Financial Literacy

For many athletes, the thrill of going pro comes with a hidden challenge: managing sudden wealth and navigating an unpredictable financial future. To address this, JPMorganChase has launched the Athlete Council, a new initiative designed to help sports figures manage their financial lives from their early playing days through retirement.

Leading the charge as the council’s chair is none other than three-time NBA champion and two-time Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade.

Unlike a traditional career path, an athlete’s earning window is unique, often short, and highly unpredictable. In fact, fewer than 2% of NCAA college athletes ever make it to the professional level, and the majority of those who do retire before their 35th birthday.

The financial consequences can be severe, with about one in six NFL players declaring bankruptcy within 12 years of retiring. A major factor behind these struggles is that nearly 65% of athletes report that they never received formal financial education in school.

The JPMorganChase Athlete Council aims to close this education gap by bringing together some of the biggest names in sports to share their lived experiences and help design targeted financial programs.

Kristin Lemkau, CEO of J.P. Morgan Wealth Management, noted in a press release that the initiative is designed “by athletes for athletes” to help them avoid the financial pitfalls that have trapped so many before them. She emphasized that the firm is committed to helping athletes manage their futures, regardless of their income level.

For Wade, stepping into the role of chair was an easy decision.

“Athletes face unique challenges and opportunities. Having the right educational resources and guidance is critical to making smart decisions about money as your career evolves,” Wade shared. He added that the council provides a powerful platform to share insights and help the next generation of athletes build their financial knowledge and plan for life beyond their playing careers.

Wade isn’t tackling this mission alone. The inaugural council features a powerhouse lineup of sports icons, including seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, soccer legends Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, WNBA superstars A’ja Wilson and Sue Bird, NBA All-Star Jalen Brunson, New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Peloton instructor and entrepreneur Ally Love.

The creation of the Athlete Council is just one pillar of JPMorganChase’s broader commitment to athlete financial wellness.

The firm is also launching an Athlete Center of Excellence, run by financial professionals who deeply understand the athlete experience. Additionally, they are rolling out targeted financial education outreach at universities and major sporting events, along with a dedicated digital content hub at jpmorgan.com/ace filled with tailored resources for every phase of a sports career.
