While HBO has yet to officially greenlight a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, the wheels are already turning behind the scenes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Andy Muschietti is actively developing Season 2 of IT: Welcome to Derry, even though the network hasn’t formally announced a renewal.

That confidence isn’t misplaced. Welcome to Derry delivered one of HBO Max’s strongest launches to date, ranking as the platform’s third most-watched debut in its history. For a horror prequel set decades before familiar events, that’s no small feat.

Serving as a prequel to Muschietti’s film adaptations of It, Season 1 traveled back to 1962, peeling back the layers of Derry’s long, violent history and the origins of its most infamous terror: Pennywise the Clown. Rather than relying solely on jump scares, the series leaned into mythology, generational trauma, and a story centered on a Black family.

Season 2 is expected to push even further into the past, with the story reportedly shifting to 1935, continuing the anthology-style structure that allows the show to explore Pennywise’s cyclical reign of terror. A proposed third season would reportedly move even further back, landing in 1908, expanding the mythology across decades of horror.

The show’s ensemble cast has also been a major draw. Bill Skarsgård returned to the role of Pennywise, joined by Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso/

While HBO’s official word is still pending, the message from the creative side is clear: Welcome to Derry isn’t done yet.
