Barbara Broccoli is stepping into her post-James Bond era with a new project, and she’s bringing David Oyelowo and Cynthia Erivo with her.
The longtime Bond producer confirmed that her next feature, Othello, will begin filming in the Gulf region in the fall of 2026.
Joining Broccoli on stage were producer Nicky Bentham and David Oyelowo, who will not only star in the film but also direct it.
The project is based on the acclaimed New York Theatre Workshop production directed by Sam Gold, which had a limited but highly praised run. In that staging, Oyelowo starred as Othello opposite Daniel Craig as Iago and Rachel Brosnahan as Desdemona.
For the feature adaptation, Oyelowo returns in the title role, with Brosnahan once again stepping into the role of Desdemona. Erivo joins the cast as Emilia, Desdemona’s maid, a character whose emotional force becomes central to the tragedy’s unfolding.
There’s still no word on who will play Iago, one of Shakespeare’s most complex villains, but the casting announcement is already generating excitement across both stage and screen communities.
Oyelowo has long been passionate about bringing Othello to the screen in a way that merges classical text with modern emotional immediacy.
Production is slated for autumn 2026 in the Gulf territory, with additional casting and creative announcements expected in the coming months.
