First Look: David Oyelowo Stars in MACRO’s Surreal Dramedy ‘Government Cheese’ on Apple TV+

MACRO Studios has released the first look of its comedy series Government Cheese, a surrealist family dramedy set in the 1969 San Fernando Valley.

The 10-episode series, starring and executive-produced by the acclaimed David Oyelowo, will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, with four episodes launching initially, followed by weekly releases through May 28, 2025.

Co-created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, Government Cheese centers around the Chambers family, who are fervently chasing their outlandish dreams while grappling with the absurdities of the real world. The story takes an unexpected turn when Hampton Chambers (played by Oyelowo) returns from prison after a long sentence, only to discover that his wife, Astoria (Simone Missick), and his sons, Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), have formed an unconventional dynamic in his absence. His homecoming creates chaos and hilarity as the family navigates their redefined relationships.

The cast also features Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), Jeremy Bobb (The Continental), Louis Cancelmi (The Irishman), John Ortiz (Bad Monkey), Adam Beach (Smoke Signals), Julien Heron (Baskets), and Louis Ferreira (Stargate Universe).

The series is also executive produced by Charles D. King and Marta Fernandez for MACRO Television Studios.
