Donald Glover is opening up about a health scare far more serious than fans initially realized. The multi-hyphenate artist, known musically as Childish Gambino, revealed during his set at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles that he suffered a stroke last year, an incident that forced him to cancel his tour.
The announcement came after fans voted for him to deliver a “Where have I been?” monologue, and Glover, 42, responded with honesty.
“I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway,” he told the crowd. “I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
At the time, Glover only referred to the issue as an “ailment,” leaving fans with questions about the severity of the situation. On Saturday night, he finally gave them the full truth: it was far more serious than anyone knew.
Glover explained that beyond the stroke, doctors also discovered “a hole” in his heart that required two separate surgeries.
“They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” he said. “You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing.”
He admitted he initially felt guilty canceling shows and letting fans down, even joking that he still hasn’t made it to Ireland.
