On Friday, in a tear-filled press conference, Mark Teixeira announced he will retire after the conclusion of the 2016 season.
“My body can’t do it anymore,” Teixeira said.
The Yankee first basemen has dealt with multiple injuries. The 14-year veteran has not played over 125 games in a season, since 2011.
Teixeira, who ranks 7th best among active players in career home runs with 404, commented on legacy.
“On the field, I just want to be known as a switch-hitter with power who played good defense and played the game the right way,” Teixeira said.
Teixeira’s contract with the Yankees expires at the end of the season.
