Tiger Woods Arrested for DUI Following Rollover Crash in Florida
Golf legend Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Friday afternoon following a rollover car crash near his home on Jupiter Island, Florida.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the 50-year-old was driving his Land Rover just after 2:00 p.m. local time when he attempted to pass a pressure washer truck on a narrow, two-lane road. Authorities say Woods, who was traveling at a high rate of speed, clipped the back of the truck’s trailer while swerving to avoid a collision. The impact caused his SUV to veer off the roadway and flip onto its driver’s side.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Woods, who was alone in the vehicle, managed to crawl out safely through the passenger side.
However, things quickly took a turn when first responders arrived. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated that Woods showed “significant signs of impairment” at the scene. While the 15-time major champion passed a breathalyzer test, showing no alcohol in his system, investigators suspected he might be under the influence of medication or drugs.
Woods ultimately refused to submit to a urine test. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with two misdemeanors: DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
This incident is the latest in a string of serious traffic-related incidents for the golf icon. Back in 2017, Woods was arrested on a DUI charge in South Florida after officers found him asleep at the wheel of his damaged car; he later attributed the incident to an unexpected reaction to prescribed pain medications and pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
More recently, in February 2021, Woods survived a horrifying, high-speed rollover crash in Los Angeles that resulted in severe leg and ankle injuries, almost costing him his right leg.
Woods has been working his way back to competitive golf following his seventh back surgery last September. He recently competed in the TGL indoor golf league earlier this week, though he had not yet confirmed if his body was ready to take on the grueling demands of the upcoming Masters tournament in April.
As of now, Woods’ camp at Excel Sports Management has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
