If you thought the Duffer Brothers were finished with supernatural mysteries in quiet towns, think again. Netflix has just pulled back the curtain on The Boroughs, an eight-episode sci-fi drama that trades the bikes of Stranger Things for golf carts.
At the center of this “unlikely hero” squad are Clarke Peters (The Wire) and Alfre Woodard (Clemency). Set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community, the series follows a grieving newcomer whose encounter with a monster sparks a revolution among the residents. This isn’t a story about “fading away”; it’s about a misfit crew uncovering a dark secret that proves their “golden years” are significantly more dangerous than a game of shuffleboard.
Creators and showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) aren’t shy about the level of talent they’ve assembled. Between Peters (playing “Art”) and Woodard (playing “Judy”), the screen is anchored by decades of elite craft.

“Our stars bring something like 350 years of craft to The Boroughs,” the creators told Tulum, emphasizing that while they expected greatness, they were pleasantly surprised by how much fun this veteran cast brought to the supernatural chaos. Joining Peters and Woodard is a literal “Who’s Who” of Hollywood legends, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, and Denis O’Hare.
While the premise might draw comparisons to the 80s classic Cocoon, the Duffer Brothers, who serve as executive producers, are adamant that The Boroughs doesn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it treats its characters as real people facing existential challenges, seasoned with a healthy dose of high-stakes sci-fi.

“While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things… the spirit is very much the same,” the Duffers explained. “It’s a story about belonging and growing up—no matter your age.”
The show aims to be the rare “triple-generation” hit, something teenagers can watch with their parents and their grandparents. With Ben Taylor (Sex Education) directing the first two episodes, we can expect a balance of sharp wit and genuine scares.
The Boroughs premieres May 21 on Netflix.
