Filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee, the director behind the cult classic The Best Man and box office hit Girls Trip, isn’t saying yes, but he’s definitely not saying no to the idea of a male-centered version of the wildly popular 2017 comedy.
During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club to promote his new book The Best Man: Unfinished Business, Lee opened up about his experience at this year’s Essence Festival and weighed in on whether a “Guys Trip” could be the next installment in the Girls Trip universe.
“I’m not saying that we’re not doing or we are doing a guy’s trip movie,” Lee said. “But you didn’t plant that idea in my head—just to be clear.”
The comments came during an exchange about the changing energy at Essence Fest and how men, from young bachelors to seasoned veterans, flock to New Orleans every July with their freshest fits and their hopes high.
“There are so many fellas that put on their flyest outfit and their hat and they go out there looking for em,” DJ Envy said. Over the years, Essence Festival has become as much a hunting ground for single (or not-so-single) men as it is a cultural celebration. “I had a friend who said, ‘I got a bunch of Essence wives,’” Lee shared.
The Best Man: Unfinished Business is a book co-written with acclaimed author Jayne Allen that explores the next chapter in the lives of the crew we all love following the events of The Best Man: The Final Chapters. Lee shared that the first book will focus on Harper, Jordyn and Robyn.
While no official project has been confirmed for “Guys Trip,” the seeds of an idea seem to be firmly planted. And with Girls Trip 2 already in development, fans of the franchise may not have to wait long to see if Lee and his team decide to flip the script.
