Qaadir and Naazir Lewis, 19-year-old twin brothers from Atlanta, were found dead on March 8 atop Bell Mountain in Hiawassee, Georgia. After months of speculation, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has officially ruled their deaths a double suicide.
According to the GBI, both Qaadir and Naazir died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Surveillance footage captured the two at a gas station in Lawrenceville, about 100 miles from the mountain, just hours before they were found.
In the video, they appeared alone, calm, and composed. Investigators later discovered the twins had researched suicide and gun use online in the days leading up to the incident.
Ammunition matching the bullets found at the scene had reportedly been purchased by Naazir and shipped to their home just two days earlier.
But while the evidence may seem conclusive on paper, their family isn’t convinced.
To those who knew Qaadir and Naazir, the idea of a suicide pact doesn’t add up. Their sister, Kai’ree Powell, described the twins as inseparable, driven, and full of big plans for the future, including launching a clothing brand, celebrating their 20th birthday on a cruise, and traveling to Boston.
The community, both in Georgia and online, has responded with an outpouring of support. A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family is raising money for an independent investigation, hoping to uncover more context around the tragedy.
As the Lewis family continues to search for truth and closure, they’re calling on the community to help keep the twins’ legacy alive.
