The 2025 Met Gala is shaping up to be a historic evening honoring Black culture and style, putting the focus on people who have shaped not only the fashion world but the cultural conversation.

This year’s Met Gala co-chairs—A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams—are the cover stars for Vogue Magazine’s Met Gala issue.

On May 5, the Met Gala will celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, an exploration of Black dandyism and its profound influence on fashion. Each co-chair will bring their unique perspective and style, exemplifying the theme of Black excellence that will dominate the evening.

Hamilton shares his journey of fashion and identity in the Vogue feature. Reflecting on the significance of Black dandyism, Hamilton describes the exhibition’s impact on him, revealing how it has helped him connect with a history of Black men who have used fashion as a form of self-expression.

Growing up without access to museums or diverse fashion inspirations, Hamilton looked up to the likes of Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Eddie Murphy. As he rose to fame in Formula 1, he faced challenges in expressing his individuality, particularly in a sport that traditionally adhered to a more conservative dress code. However, Hamilton pushed back, creating his own runway and reshaping the expectations of how athletes present themselves.

“I think this Met Gala sends a really strong message that we must continue to celebrate and elevate Black history,” Hamilton shared.

Rocky is known for his blend of street style and high fashion. In Vogue, he reflects on how his roots in Harlem have shaped his approach to both life and fashion. Describing himself as “not a street dude at all,” Rocky’s fashion sense blends elements of his background with global influence, making him a trailblazer in the world of celebrity style.

For Rocky, the Met Gala is more than just a social event—it’s a celebration of Black culture, style, and the power of representation. He’s been attending since 2015, but his role as co-chair marks a pivotal moment in his journey.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody celebrate Black excellence,” he says.

Domingo brings his love for tailoring and bold fashion choices to the Met Gala co-chair role. In the Vogue interview, he discusses his evolving relationship with fashion and how it connects to his identity as a Black man.

Domingo shares that, until recently, he had not seen representations of Black men that reflected his own vision of style. “I am a Black man who loves style, loves tailoring, and it struck me that I had never seen images like that—of myself, saying, I belong in these clothes,” he says. “I always had to look for a vision outside of myself.”

The Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition allows Domingo to see himself and his culture represented in a way that feels personal.

As one of the most influential figures in music and fashion, Williams’ participation as a co-chair is both fitting and exciting. In the Vogue feature, Williams discusses the role of Black resilience and possibility in shaping his work and his approach to style.

“I see dandyism as a set of rules and standards,” he shared about this year’s theme, ‘that reflect a certain sophistication and well-traveled taste. For Black people to hit that mark or exceed it, and be consistent with it, is a matter of pride. And consistency garners respect.”

We’ll be tuned in to social media on the evening of the Met Gala to see all the fashions inspired by Black Dandyism.
