When Viola Davis calls, you pick up—and if she says you remind her of her husband, you might just land a starring role. That’s exactly what happened to black-ish star Anthony Anderson, who recently appeared on The View to discuss his role in the new action thriller G20, in which he stars alongside the Oscar-winning powerhouse.
Anderson revealed that his casting as the husband of Davis’s character, Madame President, was no random decision. It was a personal one.
“Viola got this script years ago, and she immediately thought of me to be her husband because she says I remind her of her real husband, Julius,” Anderson shared.
The film G20, which also stars black-ish alum Marsai Martin, follows a gripping high-stakes storyline involving a global crisis and political upheaval, with Davis portraying a no-nonsense President of the United States.
“I had to make sure I showed up and showed out for Viola,” he said with pride.
What made the experience even more special for Anderson was the chance to work with an EGOT—a rare and prestigious title awarded to those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
“There are only about 18 EGOTs in the world, and Viola is one of them,” Anderson noted. “She made me call her Madam EGOT every day!”
He joked about the honor, comparing Davis to co-host Whoopi Goldberg, herself an EGOT winner. “You guys work with an EGOT all the time,” he said, turning to the View panel.
