We spoke to the designer about his inspiring journey, the creative process behind dressing Taye Diggs, and why it’s crucial for influential Black figures to support Black-owned brands.

QG: What inspired you to create your own menswear line?

EM: I have always been a creative individual, my transparent answer is God pushed me into something I didn’t know I can do. This was birthed when a friend of mine, a banker from Ghana, asked me to bring him some suits. I have always valued quality, and that request opened the door for more people wanting formal wear, leading me to launch my own collection of menswear in 2012.

QG: Can you share how the collaboration with Taye Diggs initially came about? Was this a long-term vision or something that happened organically?

EM: Working with celebrities was never my focus; it felt out of reach. But as the good book says, “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” Let’s call it organic. Back in 2018, my company first serviced his now-amazing stylist, Sha’Tarra La’Nay. In October 2024, she randomly texted asking for product for her client.

Over the years, I’ve met many incredible people through my work, and some have become lifelong friends, including Sha’Tarra La’Nay and her husband. The rest is history.

QG: How did working with stylist Sha’Tarra La’Nay elevate the looks you created for Taye? Can you speak to the synergy between styling and design in this project?

EM: Sha’Tarra La’Nay is a seasoned professional who knows her craft well. This collaboration was the alignment of opportunity and destiny, and the result speaks for itself. We could not have captured the looks the way we did without the photography skills and creative eye of James Willis of James Willis Photography.

QG: How involved was Taye Diggs in the creative process? Were there specific ideas or inspirations he brought to the table?

EM: Meeting Taye for the first time at the shoot, it was clear he’s meticulous about his preferences. His stylist, Sha’Tarra La’Nay, is just as precise — she knows his needs and understands the assignment. She and I collaborated to create his looks, and the process was smooth and seamless, as we were all on the same wavelength.

QG: Why is it important for influential Black figures like Taye Diggs to support Black-owned brands?

EM: A platform like Taye’s highlights talents that often go unnoticed due to lack of exposure. In just a few hours with him, it’s clear his heart is to help others reach new heights. To paraphrase his words: “I love what social media can do to connect people.” Sha’Tarra found me through social media — a true “wow God” moment. It’s nothing but God, His grace, and the connection of pure-hearted people.
