LeBron James’ friend and business manager Maverick Carter is lending his expertise to a group of investors with ambitions to establish an international basketball league designed to rival the NBA. Sources confirmed the development to ESPN following an initial report by Bloomberg.
The proposed league seeks to raise $5 billion to fund its operations and envisions a structure featuring six men’s and six women’s teams competing globally.
Backed by multiple private equity funds, the group wants to create a diverse and inclusive platform that elevates the sport on a worldwide scale.
The concept of rivaling the NBA is no small feat. The NBA hasn’t faced a “real” competitor in the traditional 5-on-5 format since the 1970s, when it merged with the American Basketball Association (ABA). Similarly, the WNBA gained its foothold after the short-lived American Basketball League folded in the late 1990s.
However, the group’s vision includes a balanced focus on both men’s and women’s basketball. By incorporating women’s teams into the league from the outset, the investors are displaying a commitment to equity in professional sports.
While Carter’s involvement adds credibility and strategic insight, sources clarified that LeBron James is not part of the initiative. James, currently under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers through the 2025-26 season, has expressed interest in NBA ownership post-retirement but remains uninvolved in this project.
Carter, known for his business acumen and producing credits on several of James’ ventures, brings a wealth of experience in navigating the intersection of sports, entertainment, and business. His advisory role could prove instrumental in securing the necessary capital and building a solid foundation for the league.
The group plans to tap into private equity and sovereign wealth funds to achieve its ambitious $5 billion fundraising goal. Notably, private equity funds are limited to a 20% stake in NBA teams and are prohibited from participating in governance, creating a unique opportunity for this new league to explore alternative financial structures.
With games worldwide, the league wants to capitalize on basketball’s growing international appeal. This strategy aligns with the sport’s global trajectory, as the NBA has consistently expanded its footprint through international games, partnerships, and a diverse roster of global talent.
