According to Afro.com, on March 7th, 2019, the first African American owned movie theater officially opened for business on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. Next Act Cinemas is a visionary example of what can be achieved by utilizing one’s gifts and expertise. Robert Wright learned this firsthand by leveraging his audio and film expertise into a lucrative business.
What began as a seven-seat home movie theater in a townhouse basement evolved into a luxurious 85 seat multiplex where Maryland moviegoers enjoy today. Inspired by a friend to recreate their stellar home movie theater experience on a larger scale, the Wrights co-founded this venture together and sought assistance from a friend in the real estate industry.
Robert and his wife Melinda are revolutionizing the cinematic experience with unique amenities. In one of the two theater rooms, audiences enjoy a cutting edge overhead sound system. Patrons can hang out at the bar or enjoy a meal and beverage while lounging in leather chairs. They can even order concession snacks and treats during the movie from the comfort of their seats! What’s more, the Wrights are single-handedly redefining the moviegoer’s experience, adding a social calendar full of music performances and wine nights. They ultimately hope to offer a full-service restaurant. Aside from these novelties, the Wrights are making history as the first African Americans to own a movie theater in the Baltimore area.
