Celebrity Chef and Trainer Arron Sain Talks Losing the "Quarantine 15" and More

Fitness and food, two of the things that have been at the top of most of our minds since the outbreak of the coronavirus earlier this year. We had the chance to chat with Arron Sain, Fitness Trainer and chef, who is doing his part to better humanity one bite at a time. He shared with us the importance of being healthy both mentally and physically. Arron has worked with celebrities like Fantasia, Derek Blanks and Nick Cannon to transform both their body and lifestyle.

Arron Sain, a man who loves to see people as the best versions of themselves is most recognized for making healthy changes simple with the creation of his brand Insainly Fit Meals. "I believe it's really important to work on the inner man just as much as the outer man because the outer man is a reflection of what's going on on the inside."

What mental preparation did it take to go from where you were to where you want to be?

To get to the level you want to get to, you have to be selfish. What I mean by that is you have to put you first. Once you get on that journey, it reveals your strengths and weaknesses. Having a great support system is key. The people in your life have to understand that you can't always partake in the things you used to do. Transforming your body is one of the toughest things you'll ever do because it's up to you to get up every day and keep chopping at that tree. People talk about motivation but I don't believe in motivation. I believe that you can be inspired daily. Truthfully, we aren't motivated every day to eat right, to go to the gym or to run five miles but I can wake up and be inspired by something that will get me in the mood to want to do better.

What advice do you have for those of us who were working on summer bodies but ended up with the "Quarantine 15"?

You have to stay ready so you don't have to get ready. We are more reactive rather than being proactive. We need to do the little things that build up your immune system so your body is always ready for war, whatever that may be. Eat before you go to the grocery store. Never shop on an empty stomach. What are you feeding your eye gates (what you are watching) and your ear gates (what you are listening to) during this time? The things that you give yourself do reveal themselves later in your lifestyle.

The Quarantine is a blessing and a curse. It's the perfect time to get yourself organized and find out what your priorities were and what they should be. This is the time to maximize working on yourself. You have to start somewhere. There are things that you can couple together in order to get things done. Instead of Netflix and snacking, maybe replace snacking with the treadmill or jumping jacks.

For generations, our eating habits haven't been the best. What kind of advice do you have for cleaner eating?

When you know better, you do better. Our parents and ancestors used what they were given. We know that we as black people are some of the most creative people on earth. With that being said, we can take the dishes that were passed down to us and transform them. The problem I find is, we don't know how to do it in moderation. We have to learn to get our portion control down in order. We have to drink more water. With those two, you are giving your body exactly what it needs. You are building consistency and belief in yourself. Those small steps turn into strides which turn into sprints and the next thing you know you have been working so hard building yourself up that one day you look in the mirror and you're down 10 pounds.

Why do you feel it's important for us to live a cleaner lifestyle?

Let's take my client Derek Blanks for example. He was in the hospital with COVID-19. We have been working together for almost 3 years. Not knowing that this pandemic was going to happen and he would be one of the people to catch it, he was prepared. With his daily regiment, and consistency his body was ready to go to war. We already suffer from so many things so we have to take care of ourselves first because we only get one temple. It's best to give that temple exactly what it needs so it can produce what our bodies need to produce on a daily basis.

Our ancestors came from a place where they grew their own vegetables and ran their own farms. They didn't eat the things we feed our bodies today. I try to let people know that just because certain people eat a certain type of food, doesn't mean that you can. You have to listen to your body because it'll always tell you when it is at dis-ease.

Do you think it's easier for people with money to lose weight? What are some ways for people without financial means to lose weight?

Whether you have or have not, something that you cannot buy is discipline and consistency. It comes with the drive of whoever the individual is. Money can get you in certain situations like private training, the best compliments or gyms but it means nothing because the person who has not could be hungrier to reach their goals. Give me somebody who understands this is hard and is willing to do the work. Once you understand the task, it gets easier because when it gets hard, you don't get afraid.

What is some of the best advice that you have received in life that you like to share with other people?

Believe in yourself and if you don't believe in yourself then Belive in the belief that someone has in you until your belief kicks in. That is what has gotten me through a lot of dark times in life when I didn't know. I had a great support system that I had to lean on during those times. It's important to handpick the people who you have around you.
