Thanksgiving is so close you can smell the stuffing or dressing depending on what part of the country you are. In the spirit of the “giving” holiday, young men in East Harlem ensured that as many families as possible would be able to partake in a great Thanksgiving meal. So this past weekend, The Boys’ Club of New York held its Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, where they distributed one thousand turkeys to community members from Harlem, Queens, the Bronx, and the Lower East Side.
On Saturday and Sunday, the club members got together with various organizations like FDNY Hispanic Society and State Farm to pack, unload and load turkeys for deserving families. Not only were families given turkeys but they had a bag full of food to make a complete Thanksgiving meal.
Last year, the organization distributed 500 turkeys and were able to double that this year. “We are grateful for our generous corporate sponsors as well as the many individuals who have donated to this important drive,” shared Carlos Velazquez, BCNY’s Chief Program Officer. “We also appreciated the cadre of dedicated volunteers who rolled up their sleeves, lifted turkeys from trucks, and packed bags full of food items for attendees. In the spirit of giving, the ultimate goal was to help make the holiday season brighter for families gathering around the dinner table.”
