Production is officially underway on Miami Vice ‘85, and here’s the first look at Michael B. Jordan as detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. Universal Pictures’ period reboot, directed by Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick and F1, transports the franchise back to its mid-1980s roots.

The film captures the neon aesthetic, high-stakes undercover action, and distinct visual style that made the original NBC series a global cultural phenomenon, and from the first set images, Kosinski is treating the era with real intention.

Jordan leads the film alongside Austin Butler, who steps into the role of James “Sonny” Crockett. The two roles were originally made famous on television by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, respectively. First-look set images show sharp tailoring, classic sports cars, and the moody, neon-lit atmosphere the franchise is known for, a visual language that feels both faithful to 1985 Miami and built for a contemporary audience.

The supporting cast is stacked. John Leguizamo plays a cartel villain, with Andre Holland, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, Camila Morrone, Alden Ehrenreich, Danny Ramirez, and Whitney Peak rounding out the ensemble. The screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy, whose credits include Nightcrawler, and Eric Singer, who wrote American Hustle. The film draws direct inspiration from the pilot and first season of the original series created by Anthony Yerkovich.

Miami Vice ‘85 is set for a wide theatrical IMAX release on May 19, 2028.
