Florida’s 2026 primary season just produced its most interesting result yet, and it’s one the entire country is watching. U.S. Representative Byron Donalds has officially secured the Republican nomination for Governor of Florida, placing him one step closer to leading the nation’s third-largest state and becoming the first Black governor of the state.

Donalds won over a competitive GOP primary field that included Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, as well as far-right online figure James Fishback.

A product of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood and a single-parent household, Donalds’ path to the top of Florida politics is anything but conventional. A Brooklyn native, he moved to Florida at age 17 and graduated with a degree in finance and marketing from Florida State University in 2002.

He spent years working in banking, finance, and insurance before his anger over Congress’s handling of the 2008 financial collapse pushed him toward politics. A registered Democrat at the time, Donalds switched parties and embraced the fiscally conservative worldview of the burgeoning Tea Party movement.

He first ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2012 but came back and won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives in 2016 and served four years there. In 2020, Donalds won election to Congress, becoming the first Black congressman from Florida’s 19th Congressional District.

The general election is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched gubernatorial races in the country. Florida’s political landscape has shifted considerably rightward over recent election cycles, and the Democratic nominee enters the race facing a well-funded opponent with strong national backing.

For the Florida GOP, a Donalds victory in November would mean another four years in the executive office and a continued foothold as an anchor of national conservative policy.

The general election is this November. All eyes will be on Florida.
