The Snowfall universe is expanding, and it’s taking us straight into the heart of the ’90s Los Angeles hip-hop scene.
FX officially announced that its highly anticipated Snowfall spinoff series will be titled The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, with the show set to premiere later this year on FX and Hulu, and internationally on Disney+. The announcement puts a name to one of the most talked-about spinoffs in development and gives fans of the original series their first real look at where the story is headed next.
The new series picks up with two of Snowfall‘s most beloved characters, Wanda, played by Gail Bean, and Leon, played by Isaiah John, as they chase a new dream in a city on the brink of cultural explosion.
Set against the backdrop of ’90s Los Angeles, the show follows the pair as they fight to bring West Coast rap into the mainstream while navigating gang wars and the ruthless ambitions of record labels looking to exploit hip-hop culture for their own gain.
Bean and John lead the cast alongside Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie “Buddy” Sims III. Joining the series regulars are Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse, and Quincy Chad.
Snowfall ran for six acclaimed seasons and built one of the most loyal audiences in cable television, telling the story of the crack cocaine epidemic’s rise through the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s. The Drop takes that same world and shifts the lens, from the crack era to the birth of West Coast rap dominance, from survival to ambition, from the streets to the studio.
A premiere date has not yet been announced.
