Major U.S. airlines are stepping in to help stranded travelers after Spirit Airlines abruptly suspended operations, with carriers including Delta, American Airlines, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Allegiant, Frontier, Avelo, and Breeze all agreeing to support impacted passengers in various ways.

“Following conversations with the Department of Transportation, American Airlines, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Allegiant, Frontier, Avelo, and Breeze have all agreed to support impacted Spirit passengers in different ways,” the Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Delta moved quickly, announcing reduced rescue fares across all domestic markets where Spirit operates, including both nonstop routes and one-stop connections through Delta hubs.

The discounted fares are available for five days and are being made accessible even on flights that are close to full capacity, giving travelers more options in a tight window. Delta has also extended the rescue fares to all routes between the United States and Latin America where Spirit previously operated. Travelers can access the fares directly through delta.com.

Spirit’s shutdown leaves hundreds of thousands of passengers scrambling to rebook travel at the last minute, often at a significant cost premium given the short notice. The coordinated response from competing carriers, encouraged by the Department of Transportation, is designed to soften that blow and ensure travelers aren’t left without viable options.

Spirit Airlines built its business as one of the country’s leading ultra-low-cost carriers, offering bare-bones fares that gave budget-conscious travelers access to routes they might not otherwise afford. Its suspension of operations represents a significant shift in the low-cost airline landscape and leaves a gap in service across dozens of domestic and international markets.

For affected Spirit passengers, the immediate priority is rebooking. With multiple carriers now offering discounted fares and the Department of Transportation actively coordinating relief efforts, options are available, but the five-day window on some rescue fare programs means time is of the essence.
