First Look: Apple TV+’s ‘Dark Matter’ Returns for Season 2 After a Two-Year Wait
Get ready to step back into the Box. Apple TV’s critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller Dark Matter is officially returning for its highly anticipated second season, set to premiere on Friday, August 28.
It has been roughly two years since the mind-bending Season 1 finale left fans on the edge of their seats. The first season, which debuted in the spring of 2024, introduced us to Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist and family man who is abducted and thrust into an alternate version of his own life.
The gripping inaugural season wrapped up right where Blake Crouch‘s original bestselling novel ended: with Jason narrowly escaping his home universe alongside his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), stepping into the unknown expanse of the multiverse.

Now, fans are finally getting answers about what happens next. Because the first season covered the entirety of the book, Season 2 ventures into completely uncharted territory, but with Crouch still at the helm as showrunner, the story remains in the best of hands.
According to the official synopsis, the new 10-episode season picks up with the Dessen family settling into what appears to be a quiet, safe world. However, the peace is short-lived as unimaginable forces soon force them to run once again. Jason’s growing obsession with the Box deepens, while Daniela’s escalating paranoia threatens to shatter their fragile stability.
Elsewhere in the multiverse, Amanda (Alice Braga) and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) are joining forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home.
The second season features the return of its phenomenal core cast, including Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Simpson, Fegley, Amanda Brugel, and Dayo Okeniyi.
If you’ve been following our coverage, you’ll remember that The Quintessential Gentleman had the pleasure of interviewing Okeniyi after Season 1 to discuss the process of bringing the complex narrative of Dark Matter from the page to the screen.
In this new season, Okeniyi’s character, Leighton, will be front and center as he relentlessly chases his grand vision of creating a “perfect world,” putting him directly at odds with Blair (Brugel), who is determined to stop him.
Dark Matter Season 2 will debut its first episode on August 28, with new episodes dropping weekly every Friday through October 30.
