The legendary collaboration between Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua is gearing up for another round of Black excellence. Three years after the project was first announced, production is finally set to begin this June on Netflix’s highly anticipated biopic about the ancient Carthaginian general, Hannibal.

With Washington stepping into the titular role and Fuqua behind the camera, the streaming giant is preparing to bring one of history’s greatest military commanders to the screen.

This upcoming film will mark the sixth collaboration between the powerhouse duo. Their creative partnership famously began with the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, a film that earned Washington his Academy Award for Best Actor. Since then, they have teamed up for The Magnificent Seven remake and the highly successful The Equalizer action trilogy.

Now, with Fuqua wrapping up his upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, his schedule has officially cleared to tackle the massive scale of the Second Punic War.

The film will chronicle the decisive, historic campaigns that Hannibal waged against the Roman Republic between 218 and 201 B.C. To ensure the project feels as grand as its subject matter, Netflix has assembled a top-tier creative team behind the scenes.

The script is penned by acclaimed screenwriter John Logan, whose impressive resume includes cinematic epics like Gladiator, The Aviator, and Skyfall. Furthermore, the visual landscape of the film will be crafted by three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, known for his visually distinct work on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Casino, and JFK.

While the anticipation for the film is incredibly high, the casting has not been without its share of debate. Historically, a Carthaginian from that era would most closely resemble someone from modern-day Tunisia, leading to heavy online conversations about revisionist casting.

The decision to cast Washington actually sparked a wave of backlash that reached all the way to the Tunisian parliament, a place where Hannibal is deeply revered as a near-mythic national hero.

Despite the controversy, few actors possess the sheer gravitas, commanding presence, and undeniable screen power required to bring such a monumental historical figure to life quite like Denzel Washington.
