Benny Boom, the director who famously brought Tupac Shakur’s story to life in All Eyez on Me, has officially signed on to helm Greenlight, a new musical drama from Manny Halley Productions and Quality Films.

Penned by Terence Paul Winter (The Rookie), the film moves beyond standard “rags-to-riches” tropes, offering a dual-timeline narrative that explores the weight of ambition and the true cost of viral success.

Greenlight centers on Nico Jones, a gifted young rapper caught between his natural poetic gift and the relentless pressure of his environment. The film’s dual-timeline structure begins in the past in South Central Los Angeles. We see a young Nico navigating the weight of family loss and a fractured home life. Even as a child, his unique voice sets him apart from his peers, yet the dangerous pull of local street figures looms large, constantly threatening to overshadow his creative promise.

The story then cuts to the present day, where a 20-year-old Nico is still living in the projects and remains desperate for a professional breakthrough. When a single, pivotal night shifts his trajectory and his music finally catches fire, he realizes that “making it” comes with a volatile new set of problems.

As his star rises, he is forced to confront the machinery of the music industry, as outside forces begin to manipulate his image for their own gain, leaving him to wonder if his newfound success is worth the personal cost.

Boom’s appointment feels like a full-circle moment for a director who practically built the visual language of modern hip-hop. Long before directing television episodes of The Equalizer, CSI: Vegas, and Power Book II: Ghost, Boom was the mastermind behind many of the most iconic music videos of the 2000s and 2010s.

His legendary resume is a “who’s who” of chart-topping hits, featuring era-defining visuals like Nelly’s Dilemma and Shake Ya Tailfeather, 50 Cent’s Just a Lil Bit, and Ciara’s Goodies and 1, 2 Step.

He’s also worked with superstars like Nicki Minaj on Beez in the Trap and High School, as well as his high-octane direction for Busta RhymesTouch It.
