Whitlock’s career spanned more than four decades and encompassed an astonishing range of roles across television, film, and theater.

Audiences first came to know him most vividly as Senator Clay Davis, whose elongated delivery of his signature line, “sheeeeeeeeeit,” became one of The Wire’s most iconic catchphrases and a memorable touchstone in television history.

Born on September 13, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock got his professional start in regional theater before moving into television and film in the 1980s.
