A classic is getting a gripping new life on the big screen. Rogue Pictures and Inaugural Entertainment have officially set January 2, 2026, as the nationwide theatrical release date for The Dutchman, a modern psychological thriller led by an acclaimed cast: André Holland, Aldis Hodge, Zazie Beetz, and Kate Mara.

Directed by Andre Gaines, the film is a contemporary adaptation of the 1964 Obie Award–winning play by Amiri Baraka, long praised for its searing commentary on race, identity, sexuality, and power dynamics in America.

Now, 60 years later, that tension is being reframed for a new generation.

At the center of the story is Clay, played by Holland, a successful but deeply conflicted businessman whose seemingly polished life is unraveling. Clay and his wife Kaya, played by Beetz, are trying to stabilize their marriage through therapy, but even that safe space becomes questionable when they discover their therapist’s methods are far from conventional.

Clay’s internal fractures widen after a chance encounter with Lula (Mara), a seductive and mysterious woman he meets on a New York City subway. What starts as a flirtation spirals into a psychological cat-and-mouse game, pulling Clay into a dangerous orbit that threatens his identity, his marriage, and ultimately, his life.

Early festival audiences got a first look at The Dutchman during its 2025 SXSW premiere, where it earned strong reviews for its tension-filled storytelling, atmospheric direction, and raw performances.

The film was also praised for modernizing the play’s confrontational exploration of race, power, and manipulation without losing the intensity of the source material.
