HBO is stepping into Afrobeats territory and bringing one of its biggest stars with them. The network has officially released the trailer for MUSIC BOX: Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, a new documentary spotlighting the global impact, cultural influence, and personal journey of Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Wizkid.

The film is part of HBO’s acclaimed Music Box series, created by Bill Simmons, and is directed by Karam Gill, known for exploring music and identity in projects like Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby and Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine.

The documentary premieres Thursday, December 11 (9:00 pm ET/PT) on HBO, and will stream on HBO Max.

Wizkid

Wizkid: Long Live Lagos is more than a career recap. The film traces Wizkid’s rise from the streets of Lagos to the largest stages in the world, including his historic headline performance at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, making him the first African artist to do so.

The documentary digs into how Wizkid’s music has pushed the global perception of Africa forward. In a world where Western media has often flattened or distorted African identity, Wizkid uses his platform to shift narratives, reclaim pride, and spotlight the richness of modern Nigerian culture.

Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid’s journey wasn’t backed by a traditional music industry system because, in Nigeria, one barely existed at the time. His success was fueled by raw talent, relentless ambition, and a belief that his achievements could open doors not just for himself, but for a continent.

The film follows him across Lagos and London, connecting his artistry to the complex history between Nigeria and the U.K., including the lingering shadows of colonialism.

Through interviews, archival moments, and intimate access, viewers will see why Wizkid represents a new era of global stardom: one that challenges the status quo while celebrating African brilliance.

Featured participants across the documentary include: Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, Jada Pollock, Julie Adenuga, Seni Saraki, Sunday Are, Karen Binns, Starboy (fan), and more.

This installment of HBO’s Music Box series also includes:

  • It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (Dec. 4) – A look at the late artist’s haunting legacy
  • Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately? (Dec. 18) – A portrait of Adam Duritz and the emotional cost of fame
  • Happy and You Know It (Dec. 25) – A colorful dive into the world of toddler pop and the rise of AI-driven children’s music
