- Lil Duval Talks Giving Back, Meet The Blacks and Comedy with BE Magazine
Lil Duval has always been a character. From his funny tweets to his sitcom Guy Code, you are bound to laugh. Lil Duval gets serious with BE Magazine. Talks about motivating the youth, social media comedians vs. stand up comedians and Meet The Blacks. BE Magazine: Why did you want to become a Comedian? Lil Duval: Might sound cliché now because everyone says it but back in the day. I knew I wanted to BE since day one. I knew it was something I wanted to do because it was back when no one wanted to do it and it wasn’t a big thing to do. Evidently I was supposed to do it. It wasn’t popular. It was something that was seen on TV but you never thought you could actually do it. BE Magazine: You started off with stand up? Lil Duval: Yes I started off with stand up first. At Uptown in Atlanta, I got on stage on a Sunday night. The hosting comedian gave me my first mic, I got on stage and I did good. The first time going to a comedy club was my first time getting on stage. I thought once you do that you will blow up, so I was like “ what I do next”? I was told I had to come back Wednesday and do it again. This all started by putting my name on the list (which you put your name on a list to get pick and do a set on stage) and my name got picked, and after making the crowd laugh I thought I was Chris Tucker. This was before we had the Internet to do research; all we had was what we thought. BE Magazine: Do you think social media helps or hurts comedians at this time? Lil Duval: Not really. It all depends on what you use it for like anything else. I think it’s opened up a whole other lane for comedy for people. It didn’t hurt standup at all. It might hurt the young people that don’t understand what he difference between standup and what being a comedian is because the Internet gives you the false sense of you doing good or being professionals because its simple. The difference between me and anyone else is I was one of the first to do it. I understand both sides of doing stand up and being funny online. But to the average person that think being funny online, they think they doing hard work, they think its easy, they think its really genius. But its really simple as hell until they get on stage. It’s all different elements of comedy. It makes it better for me. Those people make my job easy because they can’t do what I do I can do what they do all day. I showed them how to do it. They can’t do what I do. BE Magazine: So your name “Lil Duval” clearly comes from your hometown Jacksonville, what do you do in your community? Lil Duval: I do a lot of things. I give back to my community every year and do things here and there for them. But most importantly, I give them inspiration to see somebody from where they are from and having the whole world saying Duval (most people don’t even know what Duval means). People don’t realize the most important thing to give anyone is inspiration. When I came up I didn’t see no one that looked like me. If I would’ve came up when Mayweather was a champion, I would’ve been a boxer. When you see someone that looks like you or you can identify with them, that would inspire you. I can give money all the time but the money is not going to take you longer than what you can implement in the minds of the youth. BE Magazine: With the new movie “Meet the Black”, Why should everyone who haven’t seen it go out and watch it now? Lil Duval: BEcause it a funny movie. I know with some black people you have to twist their arms to go out to watch, but I’m not going to say anything else. This movie is not for everybody. At the end of the day, this movie is for a demographic that hasn’t BEen half dead for a long time. Very few movies that look like the urban demographic in the movie theater or for the age group from 18-30. It’s great for that demographic and that voice. Its not going to BE a 12 years of slavery but it is a funny comedy that was done right. You going to laugh. I guarantee that you are going to laugh if you don’t then you don’t like to BE happy. To read the full interview head over to BE Magazine. Meet The Blacks is in theaters right now! #Comedy #LilDuval #MeetTheBlacks
- Generation “Y”
There is a renaissance underway in the cobblestoned streets of Paris, a monstrous rumbling of “cool” that permeates through the limestone-clad walls of the old ateliers. Men’s fashion hasn’t been this exciting since the eighties. Glenn Martens is at the forefront of this movement with his architecturally inspired pieces designed for his concept brand Y/Project. Based in Paris, Y/Project is about freedom, which is evident through it’s broad spectrum of garments, ranging from outlandish biomorphic shapes to quite reserved wearable pieces. Martens manages to retain a sense of luxury throughout his collections, an irreverent luxury that makes deconstruction look, well, refined. Martens, a Royal Academy of Arts alum, has revitalized the brand that was founded by Yohan Serfaty, whose untimely passing gave way for Martens to implement his creative vision. Y/Project’s collections are interestingly spliced, consisting of half menswear and womenswear, and the remaining half being gender optional. The Y/Project aesthetic is something you will see many men wear, as the world further embraces individuality. Check out some of Y/Project’s avant garde looks below…. #Luxury #Fashion #StyledByMickey #Paris #GlennMartens #Menswear #YProject #Style #Indviduality
- Keanu Movie Hits Theaters April 29
Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, a.k.a. the hugely popular comedy duo Key & Peele, star in New Line Cinema’s action comedy “Keanu.” The duo play Clarence and Rell, cousins who live in the city but are far from streetwise. When Rell’s beloved kitten, Keanu, is catnapped, the hopelessly straight-laced pair must impersonate ruthless killers in order to infiltrate a street gang and retrieve the purloined feline. But the incredibly adorable kitten becomes so coveted that the fight over his custody creates a gang war, forcing our two unwitting heroes to take the law into their own hands. Peter Atencio (“Key & Peele,” “The Last Man on Earth”) directed the film from a script written by Jordan Peele and Alex Rubens (“Key & Peele,” “Community”). Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Peter Principato, Paul Young, and Joel Zadak are the producers, with Ben Ormand serving as executive producer. Peele plays Rell, an introverted stoner artist, whose precious cat, Keanu, has become his favorite model, and Key is his chipper, all-too-eager-to-please cousin, Clarence. The film also stars Method Man (“The Fast and the Furious,” “Red Tails”) as the menacing gang leader, Cheddar; Tiffany Haddish (“Real Husbands of Hollywood”) as the stone-cold gangster, Hi-C; and Jason Mitchell (“Straight Outta Compton”) as the hardened young banger, Bud; with Luiz Guzman (“We’re the Millers,” “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”) as Bacon, a Mexican cartel kingpin; Nia Long (“The Best Man Holiday”) as Clarence’s beautiful wife, Hannah; and Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth,” “Nebraska”) as the eccentric scumbag drug dealer, Hulka. Atencio’s behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Jas Shelton, production designer Aaron Osborne, editor Nicholas Monsour, and costume designer Abby O’Sullivan. “Keanu” is slated for release on April 29, 2016. From New Line Cinema, “Keanu” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. - Kobe Left the Game Exactly how he Wanted to
LOS ANGELES—After lauding Kobe Bryant’s talents for the first 17 years of his career, it all came to an end on Wednesday. Kobe Bryant ended the game with 60 amazing points for his Lakers in a 101-96 win over the underachieving Utah Jazz, and this game was a microcosm on why he always wanted his own team. What’s ironic about the whole fiasco is that after watching 30 for 30 on Shaq and Penny, which highlighted Shaq leaving Orlando because he wanted to be the Alpha man in La La land, Kobe loyalists in management lobbied for Kobe to stay in town, and ultimately, booted the diesel out the door in 2004 all because Kobe wanted to be the Alpha man. Kobe essentially had more power at the time because he was box office, and youth was on his side. Clearly management was looking at the future, but what we know today is that Shaq ended up winning a title on another team, the Miami Heat, before Kobe won his fourth title in 2009. Still, a few mediocre seasons after the Shaq era, the ones that the Lakers had trouble getting out of the first and second rounds of the playoffs, the Lakers prestige started to reel a little bit. However, this is when the aura of The Black Mamba was born. In Kobe’s first eight seasons with Superman, he averaged 21.6 points a game, but, with Shaq out of the picture, Kobe was finally free, averaging 28.5 points if you take away his last three injury plagued seasons. It’s clear as day Kobe had an undying passion to never give up, which was illustrated by his 21.8 field goal attempts per game in the post-Shaq years. In his first eight seasons with the “Shaqtus,” he averaged 18.5 field goal attempts. What does this all mean? Kobe ended his career the way he wanted to end it. All one has to do is look at his last game, where he shot a whopping 22-of-50. Earlier in his career, Kobe claimed his idol was Magic Johnson. But in all seriousness, his entire repertoire of moves is from the greatest player of all-time, Michael Jordan. His fade-away, reverse pivots in the post, his mid-range game, his tongue sticking out and even the way he shoots free-throws are all from Michael Jordan. His uncanny ability to play defense was a trait Jordan had as well. Everybody wanted to be like Mike, and so did Kobe. Certainly Kobe didn’t want to be second to anyone. After years of being in the shadow of Shaq, Kobe imposed his will, and wanted to show the world, doing it his way. This happened in the years after Shaq left, and it certainly happened in his very last game of his career. #lastgame #LosAngelesLakers #HallofFamer #Showtime #TheQuintessentialGentlemen #Oneofthegreatesttolacethemup #QuintessentialGentlemen #Retirement #Lakers #Ballin #KobeBryant #Basketball #Goat #NBA #BlackMamba

Featuring nationally syndicated radio personality, host and stand-up comedian Rickey Smiley, the hour-long series takes a humorous look at his life as he manages his career, single fatherhood and personal life. The second season, which finds Smiley concentrating more on the three F’s – Fun, Family, and Focus – is slated to premiere Tuesday, May 10 at 8 p.m. ET. “Rickey’s unmatched sense of humor, business savvy and passion for his family resonated well with our audience,” said TV One President Brad Siegel. “We are thrilled to team up with Rickey and both his real family and radio show family for another season of real life turmoil and love.” A voyeuristic view into what makes Smiley a successful media mogul in radio, comedy and television, TV One’s Rickey Smiley For Real, captures the syndicated host as he juggles two families – one at home and the other at work. In the second season, Smiley commits to enjoying the fruits of his labor. After many years struggling to balance the responsibilities of his large and unique family, along with growing and challenging himself in his career, he is determined to be more attuned to his own needs. Viewers will follow as Smiley steps back from his Dish Nation show, takes a trip to the Bahamas, tours with Mike Epps, collaborates with R&B icon Kelly Price and celebrates his 15th college fraternity anniversary. Throughout the second season, Smiley will also do his best to keep his kids on the right track. He is concerned with how his success may be affecting his family, particularly the boys. Brandon, Malik and Craig each challenge Smiley as they attempt to find themselves, landing in a variety of behavioral, disciplinary and legal issues. And as always, he keeps a close eye on daughters D’Essence and Aaryn as they face their own growing pains. “Season two of Rickey Smiley For Real is already showing signs of being even bigger and better than our stupendous season one,” said Smiley. “I am hugely thankful to the viewers for their support and excited about TV One’s dedication to bringing a quality second season to our viewers. Thank you all for allowing my family inside your homes every Tuesday night!” Smiley’s radio family continues to play an integral role in his life, with everyone supporting each other in their attempts to reach personal and professional goals. In addition, Da Brat and Krack expand their music and acting careers, Juicy shores up her clothing label and Rock‐T sets the example for them all with his self‐proclaimed “near perfect” marriage and charitable work.
