UNC Chapel Hill student accuses Carolina football player of rape

A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student, who claims she was raped by a football player, held a news conference on Tuesday to discuss the case.

According to a report by ABC11 in Raleigh, UNC Sophomore Delany Robinson was joined by her father and her attorney, to speak publicly about the alleged incident that happened on Valentine’s Day of this year in student housing on UNC’s campus.

“I did everything a rape victim is supposed to do. I reported it. I allowed the rape kit to be taken. I gave a statement. I cooperated with law enforcement and the Title IX office,” Robinson said in a statement. “But six months later, the university has done nothing. I’m taking this public stand not for me but for the other students on campus who are not protected, despite what the university tells us.”

Her attorney’s office said that Robinson requested self-sworn warrants for misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor sexual battery as a result of the Orange County District Attorney’s refusal to prosecute the case despite sufficient physical evidence.

Robinson’s attorney, Denise Branch, said in an email that Robinson went to the hospital the night of the incident and allowed the hospital to examine her and get all of the required evidence for a rape kit. Branch said the physical exam showed blunt force trauma to Robinson’s genitals along with bruising to her neck.

Branch said the Orange County District Attorneys told her that “unconsciousness is rape, black out drunk is not rape.”

Robinson admitted to underage drinking on the night of the alleged incident and said in a statement that she takes “responsibility for that, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to violate me. I did not deserve to be raped.”

Orange County DA Jim Woodall told ABC11 Tuesday that the case was investigated thoroughly.
