Plane Carrying Brazilian Soccer Club Kills 76 People
A plane carrying a Brazilian soccer team crashed outside Medellin, Colombia while on its way to the finals of a regional tournament on Tuesday.
According to Colombian officials, the crash killed 76 people. The Associated Press reported six people initially survived, but one later died in a hospital while receiving medical treatment.
“This morning I said goodbye to them and they told me they were going after the dream, turning that dream into reality,” Chapecoense board member told TV Globo. “The dream was over early this morning.”
The club wrote a statement on Facebook ,”May God accompany our athletes, officials, journalist and other guests traveling with our delegation.”
The plane departed from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, transporting the Chapecoense soccer team from southern Brazil for the first leg of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final game against Altletico Nacional of Medellin.
The aircraft was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members, according to authorities.
