Meet Nial Martin, Creator of His Double Life Stage Play

Nial Martin is a writer, director, producer, author, and founder of No Jive Productions. He is currently on the road with his hit stage play His Double Life, which will be coming to a city near you soon. We spoke with him about the play, his upcoming book and what we can look forward to.

Tell us the story of His Double Life?

His Double life is a genuine, sexy, funny heart filling love story.

This stage play is committed to exploring the complexities of family values within the black culture. The story focuses on Mathew, a young man who is struggling in his pursuit of acceptance, life’s reality, self-identity, and unconditional love but has to face his beautiful live-in-girlfriend, his strong Christian family, and best friend.

This play will shed light on the cause and effects that family secrecies have over one’s life, once exposed. It examines the dynamics of an unparalleled relationship between a father and son, addresses topics of masculinity, and the vital role history plays in the act of forgiveness. In the end, His Double Life provides us with a view of what can happen when we accept the differences that exist in others and the hope of knowing that love conquers all.

What inspired you to write this stage play?

I had to write about what I know, what I feel, what I remember and what I have experienced in life. I wanted to write for an audience of unheard voices through production, stage plays, and theatre. Expressing my life on paper and on the stage was the most brilliant thing for me to do. It has allowed me to speak up for so many people within our community and black culture.

Who inspired and motivated you to become a screen play writer?

My mother. She has always been my inspiration and motivation. My mother always lead by example. She made sure that I understood that rewarding experiences only come by hard work and by no means impossible. My drive and enthusiasm comes from my mother, she always told me “Nial you can make it”. In this life, you have to work hard to get what you want and put God first.

You’re also writing a book, correct?

Yes, I wrote a semi “tell all” book entitled “Breaking the Silence”. This book will educate and inspire people to overcome any of life’s most painful setbacks. This book will enlighten others by sending a message to young men growing from painful experiences. The chapters also reflect how I had to tackle some of life’s heart-wrenching subject matters that are considered to be a bit taboo, such as being a fatherless child, sexuality, relationship, love, sexual and physical abuse. This is a compelling book that will touch the hearts and souls of many individuals.

If you could work with any theater director, who would it be and why?

Shelly Garrett, Lee Daniels, and Oprah Winfrey. I respect and learn from these three individuals. The entertainment industry can either make you or break you and all three of these individuals have created platforms for individuals, like myself, to pursue my dreams and make a career out of it.

What can we look forward to from Nial Martin?

Currently, I am in the process of creating a sitcom and I plan to produce more successful stage plays and movies.
