Gemna Gvasalia: Balenciaga’s Crystal Ball

Paris Fashion Week is known to display a melting pot of cultures. Each collection is like a unique stone, coming together to build a beautiful mosaic the rest of the world looks to for style inspiration. As we previously informed you, Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia has signed on as creative director of Balenciaga, and his inaugural collection is here!

Held on the rooftop of Paris’s Lycée Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague, Balenciaga opened the show with a boxy overcoat look that was reminiscent of Cristòbal Balenciaga’s classic collections. These angular silhouettes gave way to curvilinear looks in silk jacquard fabrics. One of these looks, a violet-hued ensemble gave tribute to recently passed music titan Prince, whether intentionally or inadvertent. Slightly androgynous elements and as well as the hyper-masculine shoulders displayed a sort of ambivalent quality to this collection. For example, the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s all played a part in re-introducing the Balenciaga man.
