Eagles plan anthem protest for Monday Night Football

One team in the City of Brotherly Love will protest the Star Spangled Banner tonight.

In an interview with WIP Radio on Friday, safety Malcolm Jenkins said he and other players will make a statement during the national anthem before the Bears’ home opener.

Jenkins said the protest isn’t anti-police or against the country and flag, but he knows their actions will bring about discussion of social injustice.

“It’s important, but you obviously walk a fine line,” Jenkins said. “Your goal is not to divide people but the goal is also not to beat around the bush. If it comes down to making somebody feel uncomfortable by speaking the truth, then I’d always make you uncomfortable with the truth than make you feel comfortable with a lie. It’s always a fine line to walk when you’re talking about a team atmosphere and making sure that your cognizant of the guys next to you, but at the same time, you know, this is bigger than football.”

Jenkins decision to protest during the anthem follows 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, who sat while the anthem was playing before a preseason game.

“I support everything Kap’s doing and his whole entire message,” Jenkins said.

The Eagles (1-0) and Bears (0-1) kickoff at 7:30 p.m. CST at Soldier Field.
