Cinematic Legacy: The 2019 Oscar Nominees

Spike Lee has earned a well-deserved place among the A-list actors and directors for the 2019 Oscar nominations. He received the Best Director nomination for BlackkKlansman. This would be Lee’s very first Directing Oscar nomination of his career. Apart from this, the film has also gained nominations for other categories such as Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, and Original Score. Adam Driver made the cut for Supporting Role lineup. It’s good to know that Lee’s latest film project is a home run and receiving much celebratory recognition.

BlackkKlansman is a comedy-drama based on Ron Stallworth’s memoir entitled Black Klansman. The blockbuster film stars John David Washington, Adam Driver and Laura Harrier. Set during the 1970s in Colorado Springs, the story unfolds as the city’s first African American detective devises to infiltrate and expose the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

Director Peter Ramsey also joins the elite as the first African American nominee for Best Animated Feature. He is being recognized for the wildly successful Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse. Ramsey had an extensive background in the world of animation and made his directorial debut with Rise of the Guardians.

In Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, a teen joins forces with heroic counterparts from other dimensions to stop the menace threatening them all. The film features the vocal talents of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld.

Green Book is a biography-comedy set in the American South during the 1960s. The controversial story features the unlikely friendship between an African American pianist and the working-class, Italian American who becomes his driver. The Green Book earned nominations for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing. Viggo Mortensen scored a nomination for Best Actor in Leading Role and also Mahershala Ali for Actor in Supporting Role. The film is directed by Peter Farrelly and stars Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, and Don Stark.

Black Panther nabbed nominations for Best Picture, Original Score and Costume Design to name a few. The film received eight nominations in total. However, this does not include the acting categories. Aside from these crowning achievements, Hannah Beachler is the first African American to receive a production design nom.

In Black Panther, T’Challa must claim Wakanda’s throne and lead the people towards a brighter future. The epic superhero flick is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o.
