5 Strategies for Becoming a Great Leader

In today’s 21st century, the demand for strong leadership skills has become a vital component for most millennial men. Developing strong leadership characteristics at an early age may serve as a foundation for becoming successful in one's chosen field later on in life. Throughout my entire military service and life, I have strived to achieve success in every position I’ve been given the opportunity to grow in. I have discovered that effective leadership is the one guiding principle that enables me to get results. Whether it was leading those that have been entrusted in my care, setting an example in the roles within my community, or by being a father, I have always strived to prioritize by uplifting people with my leadership style. While every leader is different, I believe that many great leaders have mastered five areas of leadership. Here are the five strategies every great leader should focus on.

Communication

To communicate more precisely and effectively, practice active listening, use clear and concise language, be aware of your nonverbal cues, choose the right communication medium, and practice regularly. Effective communication is a two-way street, so listening actively and acknowledging others' perspectives can help build trust and rapport. Clear language and appropriate nonverbal cues can convey meaning while choosing the right communication medium for the situation and practicing regularly can refine your skills. Consider seeking guidance from a TEDx speaking coach who can provide personalized feedback, help you identify areas for improvement, and provide strategies to help you communicate with impact. With their expertise in public speaking, they can assist you in refining your message, delivery, and overall presence, whether you are preparing for a presentation or an interview.

Decision Maker

Making thoughtful and tough decisions. Decisions that are based on the whole of an organization and not for personal gain is what sets a great leader apart from others.

Inspiration

They inspire others. Set the example that failing is part of the growing process and learning from those failures creates true success. Being authentically yourself and true to your core values, even in times of tough decisions makes you a great leader.

Empowerment

They empower others to succeed. As a leader, you influence many people who look up to you, whether that’s professionally or personally. Your leadership can empower people to be confident in their own capabilities and to strive for their own greatness.

Accountability

Exemplify accountability. Your responsibilities as a leader should be met with great care and in holding yourself accountable, you show people your maturity, honesty and attentiveness to the tasks that come your way. Its how you handle mistakes and hold yourself accountable that will ultimately impact the line you cross between being a leader and being a great leader.

Honorable mention

The best leaders are lifelong learners. Your leadership should evolve with the knowledge that you continuously attain throughout your life.  Great leaders become great through being mindful of these tips in all aspects of their life.
