If you grew up in the late ’90s, the mere mention of Animorphs likely brings back a flood of memories involving Scholastic book fairs, iconic (and sometimes slightly terrifying) cover art, and the ultimate sci-fi fantasy of turning into your favorite animal. Now, that beloved universe is getting a major modern upgrade.
Academy Award winner Ryan Coogler is officially set to executive produce a brand new Animorphs television series through his production company, Proximity Media. According to Variety, the project is reportedly heading to Disney+.
For the uninitiated, the original Animorphs book series, created by K.A. Applegate and Michael Grant, was a cornerstone of ’90s YA literature. The story follows five teenagers (Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias) who stumble upon a dying alien. Before passing, the alien grants them the ability to absorb the DNA of any animal they touch and “morph” into it.
Their mission? To secretly fight a covert, full-scale invasion of Earth by a parasitic alien race known as the Yeerks, who take over human host bodies by crawling into their brains.
While the premise sounds like pure childhood fantasy, the books were famously praised for tackling surprisingly dark and complex themes, including the moral ambiguities of war, PTSD, and the sacrifices required to protect humanity.
Bringing Coogler and Proximity Media into the mix is a massive win for the franchise. Between his work on the Creed franchise and Marvel’s Black Panther films, Coogler has mastered the art of balancing high-stakes, blockbuster action with deep, emotionally resonant character arcs.
He knows how to build immersive worlds that take their young protagonists’ struggles seriously. If there is any creative force capable of translating the heavy, war-torn themes of the original Animorphs novels into a grounded, compelling television series, it is Coogler.
This latest announcement further cements Proximity Media’s powerhouse relationship with the Walt Disney Company. Coogler’s banner already has a massive footprint under the Disney umbrella, largely tied to expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe through upcoming projects like Ironheart and the animated Eyes of Wakanda series. Stepping into the Animorphs universe allows Proximity to stretch its creative muscles into a fresh sci-fi IP with a built-in, fiercely loyal fanbase.
While casting details and a targeted release date remain under wraps, one thing is certain: the battle for Earth is back on, and the franchise is in the best possible hands.
