When Viola Davis is the one to call your name, you know it is a monumental moment. At the 2026 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Michael B. Jordan took home the Actor Award for best male performance in a leading role for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
When Davis proudly announced his name to the room, Jordan appeared genuinely stunned. Taking the stage to a roaring standing ovation, he delivered an emotional, full-circle acceptance speech that highlighted the grit, sacrifice, and community it takes to make it in Hollywood.
“I don’t even know where to begin. I wasn’t expecting this at all,” Jordan admitted as he looked out at his peers. After sharing his profound respect for his fellow nominees, the actor took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on his early days as a child actor desperately trying to break into the industry.

For many actors, earning their SAG-AFTRA membership is a rite of passage, and Jordan was no exception. He recalled the specific grind of trying to earn enough union vouchers just to get his foot in the door.
“I remember as a kid in this industry, you had to earn your vouchers to become a member of SAG. I thought it was this club that I wanted to be in so bad, but you had to get vouchers depending on how many lines you had in an episode or a show,” Jordan explained.
He remembered watching established actors on stage in sharp suits, accepting awards, and thinking to himself, “Man, I want to be that one day…That kid from Newark, New Jersey, is standing here right now.”
Every actor’s journey is fueled by a support system, and Jordan made sure to give his mother her well-deserved flowers. He painted a vivid picture of their early struggles, thanking her for the endless drives from New Jersey to New York for his auditions.
“Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn’t have enough money to go through the Holland Tunnel, when we were looking for gas money, parking spaces… thank you,” he shared, highlighting the real-life sacrifices that paved the way for his current success.
Of course, Jordan could not accept the award without acknowledging the visionary behind Sinners, his longtime collaborator and friend, director Ryan Coogler. He thanked Coogler for giving him the opportunity to be fearless and for creating a safe space on set to “find the truth.”
He also shared the love with his powerhouse ensemble cast, specifically shouting out co-stars Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, and Omar Miller for lending their time, talent, and vulnerability to the project.
As he wrapped up his speech, Jordan took a final moment to soak in the love from a room full of peers who have literally watched him grow up in front of the camera.
“I feel the love and support that you’ve always given me and encouraged me to go on and do my best,” he said. “So I just want to say thank you. And, yeah, man, this is pretty cool.”
