If you thought Courtney A. Kemp was done dominating the crime drama space after building the massive Power Universe, think again. Kemp is officially bringing a brand-new, high-stakes world to Netflix with her upcoming series, Nemesis.

Co-created with Tani Marole, Kemp’s fiancée, Nemesis is the first series in a new creative partnership between Kemp and the streaming giant.

At its core, Nemesis is a high-energy game of cat and mouse. The newly released first-look images give us a glimpse into the show’s intense dynamic, which centers around two men on completely opposite sides of the law.

Nemesis Matthew Law

Y’lan Noel and Matthew Law step into the roles of the unstoppable force and the immovable object across eight 60-minute episodes. Noel plays Coltrane Wilder, a brilliant expert criminal and heist mastermind. Going toe-to-toe with him is Law, who takes on the role of Detective Isaiah Stiles, a fiercely dedicated police detective.

What begins as a daring burglary story quickly escalates into an exploration of life-or-death stakes, explosive action, and complicated family dynamics. Ultimately, the show begs the question: what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us?

While the action will undoubtedly keep viewers on the edge of their seats, the creators are making sure the emotional and psychological stakes hit just as hard.

“Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty vs. self-preservation,” Kemp shared.

Netflix executives are equally hyped about the cultural impact of this new project. Nne Ebong, Vice President of Studio Scripted Series at Netflix. “Courtney’s shows have proven to dominate the culture and conversation, and it’s exciting to have this be the first project from our creative partnership,” Ebong added.

The series regular cast also includes Cleopatra Coleman, Tre Hale, Domenick Lombardozzi, Jonnie Park, Ariana Guerra, Gabrielle Dennis, Michael Potts, Sophina Brown, Cedric Joe, and Jeff Pierre

The talent behind the camera is just as stacked as the on-screen cast. Veteran filmmaker and actor Mario Van Peebles (Baadasssss!, Wu-Tang: An American Saga) is on board to direct the first two episodes. Van Peebles will also serve as an executive producer alongside Chris Selak and Philipp Barnett.

Nemesis hits Netflix on May 14.
